SYDNEY Roosters will host Wigan in the World Club Challenge at Allianz Stadium on February 22.
Results in the NRL and Super League grand finals on the weekend gave rise to speculation there may be a push to again play the pre-season showpiece in the UK, given that one-town teams have a higher capacity to make a significant profit out of the fixture down under.
But Roosters CEO Brian Canavan tells RLW: “It’s supposed to be here, that’s what we’ve been told all the way through, and it’s scheduled for February 22.
“We’d like to have it at Allianz. Good vibes there – that’d be a great spot for us.
“We’ll just go along with the fact it’s here in Sydney in February.”
Wigan came back from 16-2 down to beat Warrington 30-16 at Old Trafford on Saturday. They scored the most famous of WCC victories when they beat Brisbane 20-14 in front 54,220 people at QEII Stadium
And that was the last of the fixtures to be played in Australia.
Meanwhile, the Roosters are yet to make a decision on whether to split the season’s prizemoney, of $500,000, with the players. Under salary cap rules, up to half can be passed on in bonuses.
“We’ll have a phone hook-up and make a decision,” said Canavan. “I’d imagine the players will get to the directors at about 2am about it.”
